The Volunteer Committee of the Wonderland Tea Party Event is fundraising for its eighth year to improve access to mental health care for children under 12 years of age. Did you know that the past decade’s crisis in youth mental health meant that CHEO saw a 75% increase in teens seeking support and treatment leading to a reorganization of resources? We are working to strengthen services for younger children in need. Our mission is to conduct fundraising efforts to help CHEO re-establish dedicated beds and treatment programs for the youngest in need of in-patient mental health care. We know that early intervention leads to healthier outcomes during teen years and into adulthood.
The Wonderland Tea Party Event is emceed by the compassionate Katherine Dines from MOVE100 radio, with guests sampling a variety of tea sandwiches, sweets, and profiteroles, as well as specialty teas and coffee.
The COVID-19 pandemic made our mission even more critical—we still need to ensure that children get the earliest possible access to in-patient mental health care. In recent years, CHEO has seen more children and young people struggling with their mental health than ever before. Add in isolation and uncertainty from the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by fears about a child’s battle with despair and anxiety, and that puts this heartbreaking crisis into overdrive. Though these troubling statistics rise annually, every year reinforces one key message: mental health disorders are serious, but early intervention can make all the difference in transforming lives.
